Located in the wooded bay of the west coast of the largest Adriatic
island, Malinska has for a long time been alluring and appealing
with its tranquillity and safety, representing a refuge, at first
for seafarers in trouble, and today for tourists and numerous
visitors. Its beaches, natural beauty of a diverse landscape,
cultural monuments and mild Mediterranean climate, with more than
2200 hours of sunshine a year, are the characteristics that attract
most visitors. The charms of the sea, sunshine and summer leave no
one indifferent. A pleasant vacation spot all year round because of
its mild climate, Malinska was referred to as an ideal health resort
already at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th
century.
The centuries
tourist tradition contributed to the fact that Malinska, although a
small town, abounds in
tourist attractions that can satisfy even the hardest to please
visitors. The richness of attractions consists of different cultural
and entertainment programs, sports programs, cultural sights and the
original folklore and folk costumes. A special pleasure in a coastal
town, which has managed to preserve the fishing and maritime
traditions, gives the tasting of local culinary specialties as an
inevitable part of the offer of every good host.
Therefore it is not surprising that the island of Krk bears the
flattering title -the Golden Island - because besides the
interesting resorts or visits to cultural heritage sights, the
connection of the island with the mainland enables tourists to visit
the nearby larger urban centres.
Welcome to Malinska!
A
little bit about history of Malinska and island Krk!
Although the
first traces of human existence on the island date back to ancient
times, Krk is best known for its tradition of Glagolitism and the
first written document in the Croatian language - the Baska Stone
Tablet - from the year 1100 A.D. Another important period in the
history of the island is the reign of the Frankopans, the princes of
Krk.
The history of Malinska dates back to the 15th century when a mill
was built by which the settlement was named.
During the 15th century, under the instigation of the prince of Krk,
Frankopan, the settling of the region of Dubasnica takes place and
Malinska becomes its centre. It is interesting to mention that the
area of Dubasnica was the only region on the island, which did not
have its urban centre. Probably that is the reason why we can
precisely state the period of its creation. The area covered with
forests and pastureland with some plough-fields, became settled and
the centre of Dubasnica as a municipality became Bogovici, a hamlet
that today grew into one with Malinska.
In the 18th century, together with the harbour of Porat, Malinska
became one of the most important exporting harbours on the island.
The exported goods were timber, oil, agricultural and livestock
products. The first houses were built in 1788 and 1795 and until the
19th century Malinska remained a small settlement.
Its present development was determined in 1880 when the first
tourist steamboat landed in the harbour and this year marks a new
stage of historic development - the development of tourism, at first
hunting tourism and later health tourism.
Until the 2nd World War Malinska becomes a famous tourist resort
known all over Europe. The settlement develops and the number of
inhabitants increases.
The peak of tourist development represents the construction of the
hotel complex Haludovo in the 20th century. |
